At Southside Methodist Preschool there is an option to do "Extended Day" from 1-3. I have never really had a need to use it and never really have given it a thought. Until a month ago... when Tucker started begging to go to "Extended" (that's his slang for it. Picture him saying it like a 16 year old valley girl. It is hilarious.)
Leave it to my son to BEG to be away from me for more hours of the day. In the past few weeks, I pick him up and he proceeds to tell me "Cole is staying for Extended." "Ben is staying for Extended." (All in this same teenage/sarcastic/mom-you-are-so-uncool-for-not-letting-me-stay voice.) This is the same voice he uses when he tells me what people had for lunch that day. "Susie had OREOS." "Hayden got to have CHEETOS." How does he even know what an oreo is... or a cheeto??? Apparently they are good enough that he can observe their enjoyment enough to covet the junk food! Again, I'm so uncool because I pack healthy lunches.
Back to "Extended." So, today, Tucker got to have his dream fulfilled. I left him for Extended. He has been excited since Wednesday when I told him he got to go Friday. "When is it Friday?" "Am I still going to stay on Friday?" over and over...
When I came to get him this afternoon he was beaming. Other than telling his teacher that her bum was too big for a tricycle outside, all went swimmingly. Until we got in the car and he turned on me. "Why don't we get to go to Miss Jennifer's for a playdate now?" Hmm. What? I ask why we would do that. He goes on to say he is "really mad" about not going over there. Then he waits a few seconds because I don't respond to him and he says "I'm really miserable about that decision you are making, Mama." Then, "I'm cross!" He picked out all the negative words he knows ("Cross" is from Thomas, of course - they always say the engines are cross instead of mad and we had a 10 minute conversation the other day trying to explain what the word miserable means. Apparently he can now use it in context :))
This kid is a piece of work.
